In an interview, lyricist Keith Reid said, 'It's the name of a cat, a Siamese cat. One day, somebody pulled out the cat's birth certificate and said 'Have a look at this', and the name of the cat was Procol Harum.

Originally called Arabacus Pulp, after a commodity Jarvis Cocker learned about during economics. This was shortened to Pulp because nobody else knew what the full name meant.

Orignal name was "Umlaut", the name was changed to Puscifer, a play on Pussy and Lucifer combined. The name "Puscifer" was first publicized as a fictional band in the first episode of Mr. Show, after which front man Maynard James Keenan transformed it into a real band.
